OwnReality_Sources

Sources

Out of the huge number of art journals that were published in Poland, GDR, FRG and France between 1960 and 1989, we scoured twenty-one titles systematically in search of articles that dealt explicitly with the notions of the real, reality and realism, and/or those that tackled artistic creation in the other three countries. The art journals selected were chosen to be representative of different formal tendencies and political aspirations, and as having different relations with the human sciences or art market. However, under no circumstances do we claim that our selection represents the entire diversity that existed during the period in question.

Each journal is described in a summary presentation (in two languages: French and either German or English) that analyses its history and publishing philosophy, as well as how it deals with the art of the other three countries and the notions of the real, reality and realism. The articles selected were each summarised (summaries are systematically translated into German and French), and, if we were able to obtain authorisation, a downloadable reproduction of it was added to our platform. The articles are available in our database and research tool.
