Henri Fantin-Latour and Otto Scholderer were bound from the time they first meet in Paris in 1848 until 1900 by an intense epistolary friendship. In their correspondence, the two artists exchanged their views on the politics of the time, their artistic training, as well as older and contemporary artists. Their correspondence is thus not only a testament to a Franco-German friendship at a time characterized by the conflicts between the two countries. It is also an important document with regard to the dialog between two artists across national borders and represents a valuable source for understanding artistic relationships between France and Germany.
